EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
